Blame it on nostalgia. Blame it on herd mentality. Blame it on having eaten too many Entenmann’s. But don’t blame the popularity of B&W’s crumb cake on tremendous taste, or magnificent moistness, or rich buttery flavor.
Let me just — gulp — come out with it: The cake isn’t that good.
Maybe it was, once upon a time — B&W Bakery in Hackensack has been churning it out for nearly three-quarters of a century.
But the B&W slab of crumb cake I had six months pre-pandemic was bone dry.
